Crystal & Sky’s Paradise Wedding

Crystal and Sky’s love story started on a cold winter evening in Te Anau, jogging with the local running club around Ivon Wilson Park. It’s an unlikely beginning, especially considering Crystal doesn’t describe herself as a social runner, and Sky doesn’t really consider himself a runner at all.

Both had travelled from California to build a life surrounded by the mountains of Fiordland. It just took a lap around a frozen park for their paths to cross.

Years later, Sky planned to propose deep in the mountains they both love. There were ideas involving signs hidden along tramping tracks and a post-run swim in the Rees River, but life, weather and logistics had other plans.

Instead, after Crystal completed the Rees-Dart circuit for the first time, they wandered the Glenorchy Lagoon Walkway the following morning. Sky paused at a lookout he’d admired years earlier, knelt down to recreate an old photo… and surprised Crystal with a proposal she never saw coming.

“I looked over and my heart fluttered to see he was actually proposing.”

A Dress That Stayed in Her Mind

Crystal found her dress long before she tried it on.

While cycling to Riverton with a friend, she spent hours on quiet roads thinking about one gown she’d discovered on the Nemo website… the Santorini two-piece.

She imagined wearing it beneath the red beech trees of the Dart Valley and couldn’t shake the picture from her mind.

Within two weeks, she’d made it hers.

For Crystal, it wasn’t just the shape of the gown that stood out. The two-piece design suited her perfectly, but what really captured her imagination was knowing the fabric had been botanically dyed with St John’s Wort.

“As a plant lover, that put it over the top for me.”

And then there were the pockets.

The Finishing Touch

As much as Crystal loved the plunging neckline and open back of the gown, there was one piece she was just as excited to wear.

A vintage wool cape from the Nemo hire collection.

“It made me feel like an elven queen.”

As evening settled over Paradise, the cape became more than just an extra layer. It completed the look, fitting perfectly with the woodland setting and earning compliments throughout the night.

Her only regret?

“I wish I’d worn it for longer.”

Forest. Faerie. Folk.

When asked to describe the day in three words, Crystal chose:

Forest, Faerie, Folk.

On 26 April 2026, family and friends gathered at Paradise Trust, surrounded by towering trees and the dramatic backdrop of the Dart Valley.

The ceremony was made even more memorable by rays of sunlight breaking through the mountains.

“The day exceeded my expectations of beauty and love.”

Although there was no wedding planner, Crystal organised the entire celebration herself, with the help of her best friend and bridesmaid Louise, who created the greenery and floral styling.

“It seemed surreal bringing together people from so many different stages of our lives.”

Crystal’s Advice for Future Couples

“Do everything you can before friends and family arrive.

Have a runsheet. Delegate tasks. Let people know exactly how they can help.

And trust your people to get it over the line with you.

If you’ve ever done adventure racing… you might be surprised by how similar the final few days of wedding preparation feel!”
