Your Alterations questions: answered

Why should I choose Nemo for my dress alterations?

The collective experience and fit expertise of our team is unmatchable. Our understanding of gown construction goes far beyond basic, as our expertise ranges from general off the rack dress alterations to full bespoke making of gowns.
Being the only bridal showroom and dress makers in the area, our services are not only convenient but all fittings and construction are done on site. Here you get to interact with our small team, seeing the same person from the very first consultation all the way through completion.

How much will my alteration be?

We cannot quote you without first seeing your dress and understanding what needs doing, so you will need to book a consultation and we will go from there! We will do our best to give you an estimation quote, but prices are based on time it takes to complete your alterations.

Any variations from our estimated quote depends upon: the original construction of dress / where alterations are required / details of the gown (e.g. beading, lace motifs or edging, such as hems).

What is the alteration process?

Step 1โ€” Book a consultation
Step 2โ€” Bring your dress and shoes in for a fitting where we determine what alterations are required.
Step 3โ€” Receive an estimation of cost and time frame of alteration from our team.
Step 4โ€” On confirmation, alterations are completed to a 2nd fitting stage, if required, or for final fitting.
Step 5โ€” Dress is ready! Final payment made upon collection.

How long will it take to complete my alteration?

In general circumstances, we would aim to have your dress completed for a final fitting / ready to pick up around 1 month to 2 weeks out from your wedding date.

We suggest booking in your dress alterations at least 3-6 months out from wedding date, if possible.

Is it better to buy a dress and alter or should I get one made 2 measure?

A dress purchased โ€œoff the rackโ€ with all of the elements you love and only needs minimal alterations to fit your requirements, can be very cost effective. Sometimes your alterations can cost more than the original purchase, so keep this in mind if you know that the dress you are going to purchase will require a large change.
Weโ€™re huge believers that a Made-to-Measure dress is likely to be a better option if you are wanting to combine elements of different dresses to create your dream dress, or have a clear vision of your dream dress. Check out our โ€˜made-to-measureโ€™ option HERE.

Why do alterations cost so much?

As alterations are time based it is possibly because of how the dress was originally constructed, details on the dress (beading or lace), full skirt hems, etc, all of which requires time to โ€˜deconstructโ€™ before alterations can even begin.
Another factor could be the dress has been completely remodelled from its original design elements, which requires a lot of work.

Am I better to purchase a dress too big or too small for alterations?

The best option is to purchase as close to your size as possible, but slightly too big would be preferable to too small.
More than one size difference will make alterations costly, as more time would generally be required to alter to a perfect fit.

A made-to-measure dress may be more cost effective than altering a gown that requires a large alteration to fit perfectly.
